Bridgnorth II (219-6) beat Smethwick (214-9) by five runs

Alex Thomas

In a nailbiting finish at Cricket Meadow, Bridgnorth's second string held their nerve to cling on for a vital win against Smethwick...

The visitors won the toss and chose to bowl first, although with a number of their players being delayed a late start saw the match reduced in length by six overs, with captains and umpires agreeing that these would all be taken off the second innings of the game.

Openers Alex Yarnley and Glenn Edwards made a steady and composed start to the innings, posting a good partnership for the first wicket before Edwards was dismissed just four runs short of his half century.

Continuing a tremendous recent run of form, Andrew Mooney then joined his skipper in the middle and played positively to increase the run rate. With Yarnley then dismissed for 71, Mooney (51) was briefly joined by Cam Wallis for a spritely cameo, but a few wickets late on saw Bridgnorth finish their innings on 219-7.

Despite two early wickets for strike bowler Wallis (2-30), Smethwick made a quick start to their run chase knowing they had less overs available, putting the hosts on the back foot. The spinners then got them back into the contest as the returning Steve Caine (3-43) worked hard to remove the middle order. A good performance in the field was highlighted by a superbly judged catch in the deep by youngster Ross Hurdley, whilst Yarnley picked up a wicket of his own and effected a run-out.

But Smethwick continued to keep the scoreboard ticking, and with the game on the edge Lewis Hurdley returned to bowl a vital tight spell. A catch off his own bowling to take the eighth wicket, was then followed by the ninth as Wallis stood firm to take a solid catch on the boundary edge.

At the other end, Edwards' was called upon to keep the visitors at bay, and with nine runs remaining from the last over, and his fourth, the tailenders were unable to find the necessary shots as Bridgnorth dug deep to clinch a five run victory.
