Bridgnorth II (147-2) beat Brewood (146) by eight wickets

Alex Thomas

The second string emphatically bounced back from last week’s defeat to comfortably overcome Brewood at Cricket Meadow...

The seamers bowled well against the top order and were rewarded with four early wickets, as opening bowlers Cam Wallis (2-24) and Toby Hughes (4-34) hit their straps. The visitors fought hard to recover through Evans and Whyle, but were the only Brewood batsmen to pass 20 on a dry wicket.

Lewis Hurdley kept things tight, and took the important wicket of Evans for 37, before returning offspinner Steve Caine (2-31) made good use of the conditions. As Hughes returned for a second spell, the experienced pair worked hard to limit the lower order batsmen, and proved ultimately successful as Brewood were dismissed for a below par 146.

Openers Alex Yarnley and Glenn Edwards made a solid start to the run chase before skipper Yarnley as dismissed for 24. Edwards, returning to his familiar spot as second team opener after a two-year wait, has made a name for himself as a finisher this season, and continued in similar form by pouncing on any loose deliveries.

After support from Ben Barclay, fellow in-form batsman Andy Mooney joined Edwards at the crease as the pair calmly took their side over the winning line in the 27th over, finishing unbeaten on 31 and 59 respectively.

Bridgnorth 2nd XI host Fordhouses on Saturday, and will now have renewed vigour to reclaim the top spot in BDPCL Reserve Division Two North.
