Bridgnorth II (156-4) beat Smethwick (155) by six wickets

Alex Thomas

The 2nds won their sixth game in succession thanks to another solid team performance at Smethwick, where wins have proven hard to come by in the past

Asking the hosts to bat first on what turned out to be a tricky pitch, Bridgnorth’s bowlers took advantage by hitting good lengths and keeping things tight. Cam Wallis, whose hard-work during the winter has been paying off this season, continued his good form and was undoubted pick of the attack with 5-41, supported well with the new ball by the economical but unlucky Dougie Roberts.

Back up seamers Matt Martin (1-34) and Ollie Gill (2-28) also produced the goods, backed up by some good fielding, and skipper Alex Yarnley picked up a couple of late wickets of his own as Smethwick were restricted to 155.

Bridgnorth’s reply didn’t get off to a great start as three wickets fell early on as the batters attempted a positive start. However, Martin and Yarnley (46) combined well and sensibly steered their side out of choppy waters and get the wind back in their sails.

The skipper was adjudged caught behind late on and was unable to complete the job, but this season’s proven finisher Glenn Edwards then joined the impressive Martin (77 not out) at the sharp end, as the pair took their side over the finish line with three overs remaining.

The seconds return to Cricket Meadow on Saturday to host the struggling Streetly, who are yet to win a game this season.
