Bridgnorth II (174-6) beat Pelsall (173-9) by four wickets

Alex Thomas

Bridgnorth’s second string completed their latest win with a slighty nervy run chase, following a good performance in the field.

Winning the toss and choosing to bowl first on a green wicket, Toby Hughes and Cam Wallis gave their side arguably their best start of the season. At times Hughes (1-12) was simply unplayable, with the batsmen unable to get near the ball, whilst Wallis continued his great early season form, taking 2-31.

They were backed up well by change bowlers Lewis Hurdley (2-41) and skipper Alex Yarnley (2-21), who chipped away at the middle order, helped out by some good work in the field. Dougie Roberts (1-21) was the other wicket-taker, along with a direct-hit run-out for Wallis, as Pelsall were restricted to 173-9 off 50 overs.

Bridgnorth’s run chase began well until opener Andy Carson (22) was trapped lbw, with Yarnley (20) and Ben Barclay following soon afterwards. Gareth Mumford (25) and Sam Morgan (33) then set about steadying the innings, but both men were removed as the Cricket Meadow men found themselves needing another 24 runs with four wickets remaining.

However, Glenn Edwards (18 not out) and Wallis (10 not out) combined to calmly knock off the remaining runs and take Bridgnorth over the winning line with eight overs to spare.

Next week, the 2nds face a potentially tricky trip to Smethwick for their first win/lose/draw game of the season.
