Bridgnorth II (149-6) beat Fordhouses (147) by four wickets

Alex Thomas

The 2nds once again came out on top in their match at Fordhouses on Saturday, although there is still room for improvement, particularly in the field

Choosing to bowl first, the start was a little wayward before Doug Roberts found the edge of the bat and keeper Gaz Mumford took the chance. The same duo then accounted for the second wicket as the ball ricocheted off Mumford’s gloves and pads into Cheema’s stumps when out of his crease. Mumford continued to demonstrate his excellent glovework with further catches on both sides of the wicket.

Fellow opening bowler Cam Wallis continued his good early-season form with 2-20, and Ollie Gill once again impressed to take 3-31. Legspinner Sam Morgan picked up two further scalps of his own, and Lewis Hurdley was unlucky to pick up just a single wicket.

Once again, loose deliveries cost Bridgnorth with 29 wides finishing as the second highest scorer of the innings. Vice-captain Andy Carson was quick to point out the importance of improving in this area, as it may come back to haunt them in future games.

Chasing 147 to win, skipper Alex Yarnley and Ben Barclay consolidated the innings after the early dismissal of Carson, before the wicket of Yarnley for 26 triggered a mini middle-order collapse.

Barclay continued to bat well, scoring his first fifty of the season, and alongside Gill the pair steadied their side’s run-chase, before Barclay was run out for 53.

Former opener Glenn Edwards, making his first 2nd team appearance in two years due to injuries, then joined Gill (19) in the middle, and assuredly took the side past the victory target in the 41st over by scoring the remaining 15 runs needed.

Whilst the Cricket Meadow second string will be delighted to have won their opening three games, they will also be keen to up their game, ensuring greater challenges do not dent their promotion ambitions this season.
