Bridgnorth II (218-9) had a winning draw against Walsall (186-6)

Alex Thomas

An excellent 112 from Joe Chadwick powered Bridgnorth 2nd XI to a rain-affected winning draw over Walsall at Cricket Meadow.

Captain Andy Mooney was a little concerned by his decision to bat first upon winning the toss, as his side slumped to 4-2 early on, but Chadwick was clearly in a belligerent mood. His 77-ball knock dominated the innings and rendered the Walsall bowlers clueless as to where to bowl.

He received solid support initially from opener Alex Yarnley (37), and then Ryan Wheldon (16), before a middle order tumble threatened to derail what was promising to be a challenging total. However, Rob Hughes (20*) took the Cricket Meadow men past the 200 mark for the first time this season, and a final total of 218-9 off 50 overs.

Walsall’s reply began solidly, as Bridgnorth missed regular opening bowlers Cam Wallis, who took his first BDPCL five-wicket haul last week, and Ben Leather. A half-century opening stand was eventually broken by highly experienced offspinner Steve Caine (3-51), and in combination with Andy Leather, the runs became harder to come by.

As the weather threatened to have a say in the result, fellow spinner Yarnley (3-27) hit the timbers three times late on to remove the threat of a late charge.

In the 44th over, the rain became too much to allow the game to reach a natural conclusion, but Bridgnorth picked up 13 valuable winning draw points, courtesy of superior run-rate.

Bridgnorth will hope for another good result when they travel to Penkridge on Saturday.
