Bridgnorth began their Birmingham League Division 1 campaign with a hard earned victory over Moseley at Cricket Meadow last Saturday...

The day saw few games completed, so the 20 points for the win sees them sit proudly at the top of the table in their first season at this level.

Boosted by the arrival of Worcestershire strike bowler, Charlie Morris, new skipper Sam Whitney had no hesitation in choosing to field first when he won the toss. On a day when weather was always a threat, the bowlers backed their captain's decision as both openers fell cheaply, with Gareth Mumford taking two good catches behind the stumps.

A mixture of rain, sleet and hail then saw the game reduced to 35 overs a side, but thankfully this would prove to be the only interruption. Tea was taken early and at the restart the visitors looked to set about a recovery but struggled against the flight of Whitney (2-34). However, they recovered from 52-4 to make 163-9 from their allotted overs, thanks to Steven Sandhu (50) and Ali Awan (32).

Bridgnorth's seamers Morris (2-26), Exall (1-19) and Wallis (0-16) all kept their discipline but the left arm spin of new boy Dan Vernon (3-34) returned the best figures.

Bridgnorth's reply mirrored that of the visitors as looked in some disarray at 33-4 before the middle order dug in to reverse the momentum of the game. Sensible batting from Vernon (43), and Morris got the scoreboard ticking, before Vernon began to open his shoulders as the Duckworth-Lewis par mark was overtaken.

Continuing his excellent early-season form with the bat, Tom Weaver produced a sparkly 45, and alongside the calm accumulation of Morris (33 not out) the home side reached the victory target in the 32nd over to win by four wickets.

Skipper Whitney was keen to praise his team's approach to the game. "It's obviously great to start with a win, but the way we stuck to our bowling plans and then showed we can bat a long way down now is even more pleasing."

He added, "Charlie will make a big difference when he's available, not just bowling but also with the bat. He brings a calm feeling with him that helps others raise their games."

Cricket Manager Steve Caine was equally quick to praise the team effort. "There is a real feeling of togetherness in the squad that will help them greatly in what will be a challenge at this level, and the new lads have settled in well to add to this. Charlie is a great asset as well as a genuinely nice lad in the clubhouse. I think we're in a good place for the season to come with a number of second team youngsters also eager to be part of this squad."
