One final hard-working team performance overcomes a spirited Tamworth, to see Bridgnorth clinch the league title at Cricket Meadow...

As has been the case many times this season, the bowlers worked hard to keep the opposition to a manageable total, aided by a typically solid fielding display. The morning's rain saw the start delayed by 40 minutes, and the game reduced to 45 overs per side. After Ralph had won the toss and asked the visitors to bat, Bridgnorth made a fantastic start as Dale Quiney and Tom Weaver took an early wicket apiece with just six runs on the board.

The visitors then recovered as the bowlers struggled to maintain an accurate line and length, but they worked hard to regain control of the run-rate. Legspinner Sam Whitney then made the next breakthrough as Tom Weaver took a well-judged catch in the deep.

Dave Exall continued the good work with a typically tight spell, and was rewarded by hitting the timbers twice, before Quiney returned towards the end of the innings to take his second wicket. Tamworth finished on 173-6 off their 45 overs, and with the pitch seemingly getting better for batting as it dried out, Bridgnorth appeared to be in the driving seat.

Tamworth's bowlers started well and made the going tough for the Cricket Meadow openers, and with Karl Quiney dismissed early, plenty of hard work and application was still required.

Fellow opener Exall, alongside Ryan Lockley, continued in watchful fashion before gradually becoming more confident as they took advantage of a few loose deliveries. With Exall in particular starting to play some aggressive shots, the runs began to flow and the tension gradually released. The resulting 108-run partnership put Bridgnorth firmly in the driving seat, as the Herefordshire captain hit five sixes and seven boundaries in his excellent 84, but was dismissed leg before with 49 runs still required.

Ian Gregory then joined Lockley, and after seeing off a fine second spell from unlucky seamer Dean Van Deventer, the pair quickly got into their stride to knock off the remaining runs needed.

Lockley (51 not out), who was unbeaten for the seventh time this season, reached his patient half century as the crowds gathered expectantly for the game to reach its climax. Fittingly, however, it was Bridgnorth born-and-bred Gregory (27 not out) who was able to hit the last ball of the summer through the covers and the duo scampered the three runs needed, sparking scenes of jubilation from players and supporters alike.

The historic win also proved a fitting way to mark Heather Evans' final year scoring for the 1st XI, having completed a remarkable forty seasons completing the scorebook in her own, well recognised style. With Birmingham League scoring being done on laptops from next season, Heather has decided she much prefers the traditional method, and is happy for someone else to take on the new technology. She will remain a passionate supporter of the club, and will forever be synonymous with the scorebox at Cricket Meadow.
