Top-order collapse brings unbeaten streak to an end at Penn...

Bridgnorth were made to pay the price for a top-order batting collapse as, despite a valiant counter-attacking 91 from Gareth Mumford, Penn chased down their winning target with ease.

After being asked to bat first, Bridgnorth’s top-order crumbled to 47-6 with only Pete Thompson (17) reaching double figures. In-form Mumford then decided attack was the best way to haul his side back into the contest, whilst the lower order of Sam Whitney, Tom Weaver and Ben Leather all hung around to support him as the wicketkeeper-batsman compiled his highest Birmingham League score.

A final score of 170 all out in the 48th over was something of a recovery, but a superb performance in the field would be required if the comeback were to be complete.

An early wicket for Jono Whitney (2-37) and some tight bowling early on kept Penn’s reply in check, but the arrival of captain Daniel Bassett proved the beginning of the end for the Cricket Meadow men as his aggressive 81 raced his side to the victory target off the final ball of the 37th over.

Despite retaining their third-place in Birmingham League Division Three, a first defeat since 18th May has increased the gap to the top two, and Bridgnorth will be keen to return to winning ways in next week’s home game to fifth-placed Aston Manor.
