Firsts claim fine victory at home as Schwarzbach and Scott lead the way

Jed’s super six inspires the Meadow Men to first victory of the season at Cricket Meadow, before seconds and thirds are outdone…

Bridgnorth (197) beat Wellington II (131) by 66 runs

An outstanding spell of 6-20 from overseas star Jed Schwarzbach saw Bridgnorth claim a vital early win at Cricket Meadow on Saturday, as visitors Wellington were dismissed for 131 in their run chase.

Earlier, skipper Mark MacPherson-Lees had won the toss and elected to bat first, a decision which seemed entirely vindicated as openers Adam Binfield and Ian Gregory (29) raced off at the start against the seamers with a half-century opening stand. At 84-1 the hosts looked to have set a strong platform, but with pace off the ball the middle order found runs became harder to come by. After the in-form Binfield was dismissed for 43, two further wickets followed before Ross Hurdley (23) and Pete Scott looked to steady the ship.

Now at 144-6 on a wicket providing assistance to the spinners, and supported by cameos from MacPherson-Lees and Gareth Mumford, Scott decided to counter-attack in typical style. The resulting 59 off 42 balls, featuring seven boundaries and two sixes, almost pushed the Cricket Meadow men up to the 200-mark, before the tail was quickly removed, leaving the hosts all out for 197.

Just like in the first innings, the Wellington openers also made a solid start against Bridgnorth’s seamers, as an opening stand of 59 put the match in the balance. But once again it was the introduction of spin that ultimately proved the key point in the game.

After Matt Martin (1-16) made the initial breakthrough, the visitors worked their way up to 80-2 before Schwarzbach’s spell started to make dividends. Finding excellent rhythm and control, the Australian legspinner ran through Wellington’s middle order to reduce them to 99-8 and putting the hosts firmly in control.

The tail then put up some resistance towards the end of the piece, before promising youngster Ethan Osborne-Welch broke through to claim his maiden first team wicket. Scott (2-20) then finished the job with the Orleton Park outfit 66 runs short.

“It was an outstanding effort from everyone today to get the job done,” said a delighted skipper MacPherson-Lees afterwards, “and so important for us to get a win on the board early in the summer.”

“Ian and Adam gave us a great start up-front, which was key in setting up a good total. And whilst we were probably a little light of what we wanted overall with the bat, Jed was fantastic with the ball. He showed his quality today, and hopefully he kicks on from here and continues to be a major threat for us going forwards.”

Bridgnorth II (127) lost to Llanidloes (214-3) by 87 runs

The second string made the long trip away to Llanidloes on Saturday and ultimately came up well short in a contest dominated by a 48-ball 84 from the hosts’ Rob Davies.

After choosing to bowl first, Bridgnorth’s seamers kept things tight early on, with Alex Thomas (1-26) breaking through in the fifth over. But from there, the Llanidloes top order were relentless on anything loose from the Cricket Meadow bowlers, particularly targeting a shorter legside boundary.

A tight spell from Guy Black was ultimately unrewarded, and despite Pradeep Pandurangan and Dileep Sagar managing a further wicket apiece, the Welshmen’s final total of 214-3 off a weather-reduced 30 overs proved far too strong.

Bridgnorth struggled to get going early on against accurate and nagging efforts from the Llani bowling attack, before Matt Lunn (45) and Sagar (28) managed to find some fluency to take the score up to 86-2. However, the scoreboard pressure ultimately told as a middle order collapse saw seven wickets fall for 22 runs. A late counter-attack from the tail enabled a further batting point to be reached, before the second innings was ended on 127.

Bridgnorth III (146) lost to Shifnal (147-5) by five wickets

The third team began their Sunday Division Three campaign at home to Shifnal, but a batting line-up missing a number of senior players ultimately struggled to post a competitive first-innings total after being invited to bat first.

The visitors’ youthful but talented bowling attack reduced Bridgnorth to 62-4 before Ethan Osborne-Welch (22) and Shashi Cherukuri came together for a partnership that hinted a recovery was on the cards. But after returning strike bowler Wormstone removed Osborne-Welch, Cherukuri was left stranded on an unbeaten 40, despite the best efforts of the lower order.

Shifnal’s openers then made an excellent start to the run chase, capitalising on some missed chances in the field to post a century stand before Cherukuri made the first breakthrough. Skipper Alex Thomas then found some rhythm to pick up 4-21 to run through the middle order and hint at a last-minute fightback, but ultimately it was far too late in the piece.
