1st XI v Fordhouses (Home) - Lost by 27 runs
Bridgnorth had the chance to ease their relegation fears with the visit of Fordhouses on Saturday as the Wolverhampton outfit languished below them in the table.
At the tea interval all seemed to be going to plan with the visitors, having won the toss and batted, collapsing to 118 all out. Jono Whitney produced a fiery spell to claim the first five wickets on his way to figures of 5-31 off 14 overs and skipper Mark Macpherson-Lees tucked into the tail taking 4-34 from 10 overs with Sam Whitney 1-17 claiming the other wicket.
Jono then looked to win the game with the bat racing to 25 in no time as he opened in the absence of Dave Exall, who was issued a two match ban following comments to an umpire the previous week. But his aggression became his downfall as he missed a full toss and was clean bowled.
No panic though with such a small total to chase and a well publicised batting line-up but ultimately panic appeared to take control as batsmen came and went with only Jack Edwards (10) and Sam Whitney (12) sneaking into double figures as the home sides chase ended on 91 all out still with more than 20 overs left in the game.
Manager Ray Perry was left flabbergasted by the day’s events “Jono bowled really well to set us up for what would have been a crucial victory” he said “But why we changed the batting order I don’t know. But again we have come against a good bowler and fell to pieces trying to hit him out of the attack” he added.
Bridgnorth now sit just one place above the drop zone with two games to play. “The two fixtures are against sides above us in the league but ironically two positive results could send us back into the top half of the league”, Perry said adding “No-one should right us off mind, as our season shows any outcome is on the cards”.
2nd XI v Tamworth (Away) - Winning Draw
Bridgnorth made the trek to Tamworth seeking maximum points to boost their push for promotion behind favourites Dorridge but more crucially to stay clear of the chasing pack that has gathered momentum in the run-in.
Batting first on losing the toss Bridgnorth were in a little bother at 10-2 before Glen Edwards (81) and Nick Gray (55) added 113 for the third wicket and provided a platform for the middle order to capitalise on as Connor Goodwin-Tindall, unbeaten on 38, steered the visitors to 220-8.
Tamworth in reply stumbled to 44-4 and promptly gave up on any positive cricket to settle for the draw points and spent the rest of the innings in defence. Liam Brown (1-40) Tom Baugh (1-21) Andrew Leather (2-31) Steven Caine (2-24) and Gray (2-10) all got reward for their endeavour but were ultimately frustrated by the negative approach and slow wicket of the hosts who finished on 127-8.
The draw points keep Bridgnorth in second place but neighbours Wombourne have closed in waiting for any slip up in the race to the Premiership.
3rd XI v Newport (Home) - Won by 138 runs
Title contenders Newport visited the Chelmarsh Oval on Saturday in a game that could prove vital in the race to climb out of Division 5, and Bridgnorth’s young third team ran out comfortable winners by 137 runs.
Jimmy Shaw lead from the front as the opener powered his way to 60 and with contributions from Harry Martin (54) and Elliot Pottinger (40) skipper Pete Oliver was able to declare on 239-9 as he sought to give his bowlers more time to bowl out the visitors.
Seamer Alex Thomas continued his purple patch claiming 4-36 once Ben Leather had claimed the first wicket on his way to 1-27 to set up the host’s victory charge, which accelerated with the introduction of spinner Jake Harvey (3-26).
The visitors were all out for 102 in the 23rd over to cement Bridgnorth in second spot clear of their visitors by 20 points and only 3 points behind leaders Welshpool who have justified their dark horses tag.
