Bridgnorth 1st XI faced Wednesbury on Saturday, and chose to bat first under more sunny skies at Cricket Meadow.

Dave Exall, back in the side after returning to the country mid-week after an off-season down under, made a brisk start along with fellow opener Ryan Lockley as the 50 partnership was struck up in the first 10 overs.

Wednesbury started to gain a touch more control on proceedings once Exall had been dismissed for 42, as scoring became less fluent against the slower bowlers. Lockley, Tom Weston and Chris McMillan kept the score ticking over but a shuffled batting order faltered to 124-6.

Jono Whitney and skipper Mark MacPherson-Lees then got together in the middle and the runs started to flow a little more, a timely partnership of 59 greatly helping the home side's cause.

Whitney continued to plunder runs, with useful support from Jack Edwards and Sam Whitney, before he was eventually dismissed from the final ball of the innings for 66 off just 62 balls. Bridgnorth finished with a healthy total of 241-9 off their 50 overs.

In reply Wednesbury were also able to get off to a good start with the new ball coming on nicely and a fast outfield encouraging stroke play.

Jono Whitney then gained the initial breakthrough at 46-1, whereupon once again the middle order found things harder going with less pace on the ball. From here Bridgnorth were in control of the game as wickets fell at fairly regular intervals, and the required run rate increased.

Whistance, batting at six, showed some fight for the visitors with a counter-attacking 67, but it wasn't enough as the Cricket Meadow men eventually bowled out the visitors for 168 in the penultimate over. Jono Whitney was the pick of the bowlers with 4-20, Edwards picked up a brace, whilst Tom Weaver, Sam Whitney, MacPherson-Lees and Exall all picked up one apiece.

Bridgnorth will be fairly happy with their build up to this season, and look forward to their first Birmingham League Division Two match when they travel to Stratford-upon-Avon on 7th May.
