Result - Match Abandoned

Whilst the weather claimed the games involving the club's 2nd and 3rd XI's, Bridgnorth 1st XI sat out the early storm at Whitchurch to start a 25 overs-a-game on a dubious decision to try and get some cricket.

The hosts lost the toss and batted first and Maz Hasnain starred with the bat as the bowlers struggled with the wet ball. The all-rounder plundered 94 from 69 balls to help post an imposing 191-7. Jono Whitney claimed 5-77 bowling for the visitors before scoring a rapid 28 to set the run chase away.

Pete Thompson showed quality in his unbeaten 70 and was in the company of Dave Exall (30*) when the rains came again to bring an early end to the match. Bridgnorth this time were on the better end of the bonus points system and came away with nine to the hosts' seven.

Both side's batsmen were in carnival mood to produce a low-scoring nail-biter that the visitors shaded in the final over of the game. Batting first, the home side had grafted to 152-4 with half centuries from Pete Thompson and Tom Whitney before capitulating at 160 all out with an over to spare.

The visitors reply got away to a comfortable start as the prolific Simon Macey (31) and James Boyle (74) appeared in no trouble, before a smart catch by Tom Whitney at cover removed the former. This started a procession as no other batsman steadied the ship until Martin Sprague at number nine.

It then took the visitors the extra over they claimed in bowling their hosts out early to edge past the target for victory. Leg-spinner Sam Whitney, and seamers Jono Whitney and Ed Lewis were among the wickets as well as beneficiaries of some elaborate shots that Bridgnorth caught well.

Mark MacPherson-Lees could not believe what unfolded on the day. "After coming away with the lion's share of the points from the game at Whitchurch a result would have set us up well for the summer. Where the batsmen were I am not sure, but to fall away like that is a concern.

"I was pleased with the response in the field and thought we bowled well as a unit. Had we got the rub of a couple of umpiring decisions we may well have sneaked it," he said.

Result - Lost by 3 wickets

Bridgnorth 2nd XI made the short trip to Wombourne on Monday and lost by 3 wickets. Batting first on a bowler-friendly wicket Bridgnorth were pleased to reach 217-5. Youngster Tom Weston top scored with an unbeaten 83, with support from Glenn Edwards, Matt Martin and Greg Lewis.

The home side then lost an early wicket as Tom Baugh claimed a wicket on his debut in his first over, and the miserly Andy Leather kept the chase in check. Wombourne's Craig Mulvhill proved a stubborn rock, reaching his century to steer his side to victory in the last over of the match with seven wickets down.
