Bowling: N. Johnson 3-66, N. Gray 2-31.

Bridgnorth 2nd XI travelled to league leaders Shrewsbury on Saturday and came away second best as they went down by 60 runs.

The home side won the toss and elected to bat first and found runs aplenty, reaching 158-2 with 10 overs to go. The Bridgnorth bowlers fought back though as Nick Gray (2-31) and the relentless Neil Johnson (3-66), who bowled 17 overs unchanged, restricted the hosts to 210-7.

Bridgnorth's chase never got going as the top order all got starts before getting out cheaply and at 74-7 a humiliating defeat was on the cards. The lower order showed their mettle though as initially wicketkeeper-batsman Rob Hughes (30*), followed by fast bowler Simon Pitt (25) put some smiles back on the Bridgnorth faces. The inevitable finally came though as Bridgnorth were all out for 150 with 10 overs still remaining.

1st XI v Beacon - Sunday 8th June (SSSCL)

Bridgnorth CC Sunday 1st XI v Beacon (Away)

Bridgnorth 1st XI (159) lost to Beacon (160-5) by 5 wickets

Batting: G. Edwards 40, A. O'Connor 36, J. Jones 36, A. Carson 23.
Bowling: D. Taylor 2-18, M. Martin 1-8.

Bridgnorth 1st XI went down by five wickets away to Staffordshire side Beacon.

In hot and sunny conditions the visitors won the toss and without hesitation opted to bat first but were in all kinds of trouble as the batting order melted away to 68-6. Only opener Andy O'Connor with a quick-fire 36 and Andy Carson with 23 managed any kind of runs. A seventh wicket stand between Josh Jones, who showed great temperament with a fighting 36, and captain Glenn Edwards (40) rescued the situation as they pushed the total to 159 off their 40 overs.

A depleted bowling line-up were always going to struggle to hold the home batsmen and this proved to be the case as Bridgnorth reached 160-5 with 8 overs still to go to win by 5 wickets. Young seamers Dan Taylor (2-18) and Matt Martin (1-8 off 6 overs) were the pick of the bowlers but the real highlight was a direct hit run out by super sub Pete Oliver.
