Bridgnorth 1st XI's campaign for the 2007 season got off to a tremendous start with a 221 run victory over Oswestry CC on Saturday. After winning the toss Bridgnorth elected to bat on what looked like a very flat, dry Oswestry wicket. New club professional, South African Murray Spence, dominated from the start playing shots all over the park. He was quickly joined by club captain Pete Thompson, who joined in the fun and compiled runs quickly.
After 20 overs the two had compiled a massive 197 runs for no loss of wicket, and shortly after both retired once they reached their respective hundreds. The quick scoring continued with the returning Matt Turner and Gareth Mumford taking the total to a huge 318-5 from the 40 overs.
In reply Oswestry were no match for the Bridgnorth attack, who reduced them to 13 for 6 with 2 batsmen having to go to hospital due to the hostile bowling of Ian Baldwin. Only H. Cooper (63) proved to have any resistance, and the inevitable happened in the 22nd over with Oswestry being bowled out for 97. Club Captain Pete Thompson was very pleased with the discipline and performance of his players and is very much looking forward to the forthcoming season.
Bridgnorth look forward to a visit from Wombourne next Saturday in another pre-season friendly.
